How long has your camp been operational?

We are only in our second year but don’t let that fool you.  Everyone of our counselors and program director’s  has a vast amount of summer camp experience.

Where are you located?
Our base camp is located in Lyle, WA where we rent a modern high school.  We are 90 minutes east of the Portland International Airport.  WE are on the Washington side of the magnificent Columbia River in a wonderful area known affectionately as “The Gorge.”

What is your Camp Philosophy?
We focus on motivated teens who would love the unique opportunity to learn their passion from a true expert or world class professional.  When teens are grouped by their passion, something magical happens, that is wonderful beyond what words can express.  We are not a competitive camp where teens always have to “prove” themselves.  Ours is more of a camp where kids find joy and self -confidence  in pursuing something that was already inside of them.

What activities do you offer?
In addition to the specialties offered below  all of our camps will have the opportunity for hiking, swimming , stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) and white water rafting.

What does your camp specialize in?
Our specialties are Photography, Music, Rock Climbing, Martial Arts, and Paddle Sports.  Paddle Sports include canoeing, kayaking, surfing, stand up paddle boarding and white water rafting

How much staff do you have and how do you recruit staff?
We have  one staff for each four campers.  Our C.I.T.’s come from our most impressive older campers from the previous season and receive training before the camp sessions and during the camp sessions constantly..  All program directors  and counselors are have been professionally hand- picked and known by our President or myself for 20 or 30 years, all of whom have a proven track record for positively influencing  the lives of young people. If we ever had to hire someone outside of our professional backgrounds, we would use the placement offices of the local colleges and universities, Camp America or the American Camp Association, and of course would do all of the appropriate background checks.

Why should parents send their kids to your camp?
For peace of mind that their child will be well supervised and will be safe 24 /7 while having the time of their lives.  They will be provided the highest level of instruction of the specialty of their choice.   Our  program directors who are not only passionate about their subject matter but know how to work effectively and enjoyably with teens.  We offer a well balanced approach where teens will not burn out on any one thing.  We know instinctively when to bring in a new activity, or when to let them rest. Without question, our food is very wholesome and delicious. The surrounding area is absolutely breathtaking with snowcapped volcanoes, ancient forests, fields of lavender and wildflowers, raging rivers and waterfalls that will leave a lasting impression and develop a sense of appreciation and respect for the natural world.

What is the typical length of the sessions  and approximate pricing of your camps?
All of our camps are 10 day camps and they vary from $1950 to $2150 which includes airport pick up and drop offs.

When does your camp enrollment start and finish?
That will vary from year to year but in general I would  say January 1 through mid -June.

When is the best time for parent to reach you to register for camp?
A parent can go online and register 24/7 or call  reach me live at 1-801 -679-9099  seven days a week between the hours of 9 to 6 daily MST.

Is there anything else that would be helpful for parents to know more about your camp?

All of our teachers, counselors and program directors genuinely care about our campers, and have a proven, long term track record of success in working with and motivating teens.  To quote one of our 2012 campers  “This is a wonderful and insanely fun experience.”

The Importance of Quality Teachers/Program Directors

The importance of education has been written about again and again, but perhaps never so well as in Thomas Friedman’s and Michael Mandelbaum’s book “That Used to Be Us.”

“While teachers and principals cannot be expected to overcome our educational deficits alone, outstanding teachers and principals can make a huge difference in student achievement. So we need to do everything we can as a society to recruit, mentor, and develop the best cadre of teachers and principals we can. Bill Gates, whose Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation invests heavily in studying and improving K-12 public school education, says its research shows that ‘of all of the variables under a school’s control, the single most decisive factor in student achievement is excellent teaching’.”

We understand this implicitly at the Columbia Gorge Teen Camps. The vast majority of our board members are career educators or business leaders with a large commitment to education. Some of them are still currently teaching at the high school or college level and some have retired.  Some have been camp directors.  Unlike some schools whose arms are often tied in hiring the teachers they want to hire, summer camps have no such restrictions. We go all out to hire experts to world class professionals in each and every one of our specialty camps. Each of our teachers and program directors is unusually renowned for their expertise and proven ability to teach and for their exceptional  rapport and successful track record with teens. Our campers are not forced to go to camp.  They attend our camp totally because they want to learn and have fun with other motivated campers and learn from  our dynamic and committed teachers/counselors and program directors.

Teens love being around other teens who share their passion, be it Photography, Martial Arts, Music Discovery, Rock Climbing or Paddle Sports. That is at least part of the magic of the Columbia Gorge Teen Camps.

Rock Climbing Camp with Beth Rodden

Every year we strive to be the best climbing camp available, and while a lot can be said for location and food, the number one way we accomplish that is through our world class instructors. This year we welcome back celebrity climber Beth Rodden for our August 1st-10th session. This incredible opportunity gives our campers first hand access to Beth and her incredible climbing skills.

Beth Rodden: photo by Ace Kvale

Beth Rodden is a young American rock climber that started breaking records when she was just 18 years old. She is one of the first female climbers to ever redpoint a traditional climb. Her impressive skills and dedication to the sport inspired one of Beth Rodden’s idols to invite her to to partake in the first all female ascent of a difficult mountain called Tsaranoro Massif in Madagascar. This is where Beth Rodden learned a lot from Lynn Hill and another famous climber Nancy Feagin. Beth Rodden is supported by a large group of sponsors, Oakley and Clif Bar are just a few of the big names on that list.

Beth is a young and eager climber. Her impact on climbing world records is only topped by her impact on the climbing world at large. She is an avid instructor who learned from the best of the best, and took their knowledge to develop her own unique style of climbing. Climbing is her full-time passion, and that passion is what she will pass on to our campers. This is a unique opportunity to learn form the best and it should not be missed!

Amazing Climbing Instructor, Lynn Hill at CGTC 2013

Lynn Hill will be joining our 2013 Climbing Camp to offer unparalleled teaching and guidance to this year’s campers.

Lynn Hill has a huge presence in the climbing profession. She is one of the best competitive rock climbers in the world. Lynn Hill started climbing at the age of 14 and within a few years, she became known as “the woman who changed the face of rock climbing” after completing the first free ascent by any human of The Nose on El Capitan.

She has many record breaking, ground breaking accomplishments, among which include:

  • winning numerous competitive titles at home and abroad
  • a current climbing sponsorship from Patagonia as ambassador
  • author of “Climbing Free: My Life in the Vertical World
  • constantly expanding the horizons not only for women climbers, but climbers the world over

What an amazing opportunity for our campers!

Lynn Hill not only broke nearly every female climbing record, but during the 1980′s-1990′s she began knocking the boys off their pedestals too. She effectively challenged the gender gap in the sport and came full circle to bridge that gap. Climbers all over the world, both men and women hold her in the highest regard as their inspiration and teacher. Lynn Hill will be acting as instructor, adviser and inspiration to all our 2013 campers. And will be pushing our campers to excel at a mentally and physically challenging sport.

This will be a special, unique opportunity for all teens interested in climbing as a hobby or profession. One sure not to be missed!

The Best Teen Climbing Camp for 2013 – by Rick Harrell

This is going to be great! This  ten day summer camp will  focus on climbing and fun. Come to the beautiful Columbia River Gorge and go rock climbing with the Columbia Gorge Teen Climbing Camp. Climb at Smith rocks for three days with climbing legends Lynn Hill and Beth Rodden.

This year’s climbing camp has so much to offer for the beginning to intermediate level rock climber. Even if you’re an advanced rock climber we will find the right challenge for you. You will enjoy all the Gorge has to offer. Excellent sport and traditional climbing can be found all throughout the Gorge. After receiving your tent assignment and making some new friends we will head out to HorseThief Butte for our introduction to climbing outdoors. We will learn to belay a leader, rappel, build anchors and learn the techniques necessary to ascend vertical rock safely.

Each day is a different adventure. There are so many places to climb with such a variety of climbing available that it defies the imagination. Beacon Rock offers long multi-pitch traditional climbing on flawless rock while the Ozone offers bolted sport climbing at every level. We will visit and climb at various locations throughout the Gorge until we leave for Smith Rocks where we will climb with Lynn Hill and/or Beth Rodden. This is an amazing opportunity to learn from the best. Lynn Hill, famous for her all free in a day ascent of the Nose route on El Captain will observe you climbing and offer tips and techniques to make you a better and  more efficient climber. You will get a chance to hang with the big dogs! In our second session, August 1-10, we will climb with Beth Rodden at Smith Rocks.

Beth is one of the strongest and best female rock climbers in the world with many 5.14 first ascents.   This girl really rocks!

While days at Smith Rocks in July and August can be very warm we will round out our days with some swimming and relaxing at nearby Steelhead Falls. Perhaps we will even get the chance to slackline across the falls!

When we return to the Gorge a day of R&R includes swimming at the popular Mosier pocket, Coburg beach on the Columbia, climbing Dog Creek Falls and a hike/swim down the spectacular Oneonta Gorge. There really is something for everyone in this camp. While all camps are focused on fun,  safety is our number one concern.  This camp will include professional instruction and all the basic tools and techniques necessary for safe climbing. You are expected to have your own harness, climbing shoes and personal anchor.   All other climbing gear is provided by the camp.

So are you ready to rock? There’s a lot to see and do here in the Columbia River Gorge. I look forward to meeting you all and getting outside to do some climbing soon.

Plugin to nature & pump up your brain.

We all know that getting into nature is great exercise for your body. But what about your brain? A new study by David Outdoor activities make you more creative!Strayer, a University of Utah psychology professor, confirms that being outdoors increases creativity, decision making and problem solving skills. Being in nature, and being disconnected from our ‘devices’ makes our brains work in different ways. It forces us to think things through, to come up with creative solutions and to utilize our existing knowledge to form new conclusions. Being away from an internet connection stops us from searching for answers, so that we can create answers for ourselves.

Professor Strayer sent 56 people on 4-6 day wilderness hikes, completely removed from iPad, iPhone and laptops. Twenty-four participants were given a creativity test the morning before their hikes, the rest were tested on the fourth day of their trip. Those tested later did 50% better than the first group.

Being in nature helps us to slow down and process information more thoroughly. There is no quick answer. Strayer says, “The constant bombardment of technology and urban life is draining the frontal portion of the brain, suppressing problem solving, decision making and creativity. When you get away from that hustle and bustle and out in nature, where it is soft and fascinating, your brain can replenish, become sharper and focus on thinking.”

At Columbia Gorge Teen Camps we put this study to work. Our campers get out into nature and learn to think for themselves, to push themselves not only physically but mentally as well which engages them with their own thoughts and with others. Away from smart phones and instant answers campers can sort through their thoughts, formulate their opinions, and come back from their summer adventure revitalized.

Climbers from the 2012 Camp

Comments from our awesome campers. Thanks everyone!

Columbia Gorge Campers had a great time this year. Here’s what they had to say…

“Colombia Gorge Teen Camp was amazing! It was a ten day camp but it felt much shorter because I was having such a good time. The food was delicious and I was never hungry (which is really good for a teenage guy). I really liked all the activities we did, especially the river rafting. Thanks campers and staff for being so nice and helping me to have a great camping experience.”

“My sincere gratitude to Jan, Bob and all of the staff at the Columbia Gorge Camp. The generous support, kindness and excellence in skilled outdoor leadership is second to none. My daughter had a fabulous time and her biggest complaint was she’d of liked to be there longer and had more time. The amazing opportunity for her to climb under the guidance and care of Lynn
in ORegon was a once in a lifetime experience she will never forget. Thank you one and all for an outstanding experience. You run a top notch camp. I wouldn’t hesitate to make a positive recommendation to anyone!! All the best.”

“The Columbia Gorge Photography camp was a great camp to enhance my photography skills while having a good time wit h the other photographers there. I didn’t know what I would get out of the camp, so I was quite nervous before getting to meet the counselors and peers there. After the first few days, I felt like I knew everybody from before and I ended up having a great experience. I had been doing photography prior to going to this camp, but I really feel like I can take better pictures now after hearing expert tips from Craig Hanson and Chuck Feil; the Professional Photographers. They were both very enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge to everybody and were great people to be around. The food at this camp was delicious and the activities that we did were very exciting. I would recommend this camp to any teen who either wants to get started in photography career or even for those who have previous experience but just wants to add more “wow” into their pictures.
Awesome camp!!”

“I had been doing photography for quite some time and had learned a lot coming into Columbia Gorge Photography Camp. Though, I may not have learned as much as others about the basics of photography, I learned many more advanced skills like composition. It was a great camp with a great sense of camaraderie even though we were only together for 10 days. I think everyone agrees with me when I say this, being with other photographers really helped because none of us felt awkward taking photos non stop. The views were amazing and the camp was amazing.”

“I went to the Columbia Gorge Photography camp not even very interested in photography. I want to be a journalist, and I knew that a better grasp on photography would be useful. But, due to the location and the instructors and my overall experience, I ended up loving it more than I could have ever imagined. Probably my favorite part was being able to do an overnight at Mt. Hood. It was gorgeous, and the camping aspect made me feel even more connected to the pictures I was taking. I came in not really knowing how to use my camera that well, but between the fantastic Craig Hanson and the hilarious Chuck Feil, I suddenly had the knowledge necessary to take pictures I never thought I would be capable of. Though I may not be returning next year myself (there are so many places in the world to photograph, I just want to keep moving!) I would reccommend it to anyone who wants a fun experience and an edge with their photography skills. Also, THE FOOD IS DELICIOUS.”
